What you actually pay for in a crib that lasts.
Short answer: a luxury crib is worth it when you'll use it for more than the crib years. A premium convertible crib that becomes a toddler bed, a daybed and then a full-size bed can cost less per year than a budget crib replaced after two years. For example, Romina's Karisma Crib to College Set ($4,412) includes the crib, the double dresser and the full-bed conversion kit. Used from birth to 18, that's about $245 a year for a bed and a dresser. If you only need a crib for two years and won't keep it, a luxury crib is harder to justify.
Here is how to do the math for your family, and what the extra money should actually buy.
What do you get for the price of a luxury crib?
The price tag should map to things you can check, not just a brand name. With Romina, the extra cost goes into:
- 100% solid hardwood. No particleboard or MDF. Karisma, for example, is solid wood and weighs 119 lb as a crib.
- Greenguard Gold certification on every product. All Romina cribs and all case goods (dressers, nightstands, bookcases) are certified, and products are tested for over 350 VOCs and 10,000 chemicals.
- Water-based, organic finishes applied in a 10-step process, with no lead, no phthalates and no chemical accelerants.
- Hardware rated for decades. Romina's dressers use soft-close drawer glides rated for 80,000 cycles, about 73 years of use.
- A real conversion path. Design-specific toddler rails, conversion kits and low-profile footboards, made to match the crib.
- Made in Europe in Romina's own factory, where every stage, from log to final finish, happens under one roof.
Independent reviewers noticed. The Baby Bargains guide gave Romina an "A" rating, calling it "one of the best nursery furniture lines on the market" and "the real deal".

How do you calculate the cost per year of a crib?
Divide everything you'll spend by the years you'll use it.
| Path | What you buy | Total | Years used | Cost per year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Karisma, crib stages only | Karisma Convertible Crib | $1,725 | 4 (crib, toddler bed, daybed) | about $431 |
| Karisma, every stage | Crib + toddler rail ($275) + conversion kit ($530) | $2,530 | 18 | about $141 |
| Karisma Crib to College Set | Crib + double dresser + conversion kit | $4,412 | 18 | about $245 (bed and dresser) |
The longer the furniture stays in use, the lower the yearly cost. That's why a convertible crib makes the most sense when you plan to convert it.

When is a luxury crib not worth it?
Be honest about how you'll use it:
- You'll only need a crib for a short time (a travel crib, a grandparent's house, a second home). A simple, safety-certified crib is enough.
- You already know you'll want a different big-kid bed. Then the conversion kit you'd never use isn't value. Consider a classic crib instead, such as the Cleopatra Classic Crib ($1,725), which converts to a toddler bed.
- You're stretching the budget. Every crib sold in the US must meet the same mandatory CPSC and ASTM safety rules. Paying more buys materials, finish, longevity and look. It doesn't make a compliant budget crib unsafe.
What hidden costs should I compare between cribs?
The sticker price is only part of it. Compare:
- Conversion parts. Are toddler rails and full-bed kits sold, and will they still be available later? Romina's FAQ says that if a product or finish is discontinued, customers are told and given a chance to complete their collection within set time limits. The safest move is to buy the kit up front.
- Mattress support. Romina's conversion kits include two sets of slats, so you don't need a box spring at the full-bed stage.
- Shipping. Most items in Romina's online store ship free as palletised curbside delivery. White Glove Delivery and expert installation may be available in some areas for an extra cost.
- Repairs. Solid wood can be touched up. Romina sells a finish-matched Touch-Up Kit ($25), and replacement parts are available.
- Warranty. Romina cribs carry a 3-year warranty; case goods carry 1 year, and the drawer glides are rated for 80,000 cycles.
Which Romina crib gives the most value?
Value depends on how far you'll take it:
- Most years per dollar: the Karisma Convertible Crib / Solid Back ($1,725). It's among the lowest-priced Romina convertibles, rated for 250 lb as a full-size bed, and offers three types of full-size bed conversion.
- Most style for the long haul: the Cleopatra Convertible Crib / Open Back ($1,810), with classic architectural detail that carries into a teen room.
- Modern rooms: the New York 5-in-1 Crib ($1,865), in one finish or two-tone.
All Romina convertible cribs follow the same five official stages: Standard Crib (0–24 months), Toddler Bed and Daybed (24 months–4 years), then Full Size Bed and Customised Full Size Bed (4 years to forever).
