Baby Bedroom Furniture That Converts: Crib, Dresser and Beyond

Posted by Mom, Unabridged on

Which baby furniture keeps working after the baby years, what each piece turns into, and what it costs to get there.

Short answer: the baby bedroom furniture that converts best is the crib and the dresser. A 5-in-1 convertible crib becomes a toddler bed, a daybed and then a full-size bed with a conversion kit, and a dresser with a changing tray on top becomes an ordinary bedroom dresser once the tray comes off. Nightstands, bookcases and tall chests don't convert, but if they're well built they don't need to: they simply keep working in a big-kid room. At Romina, every piece is 100% solid wood, Made in Europe, Greenguard Gold certified and covered by a 3-year warranty.

What "convertible" means for baby furniture

"Convertible" gets used loosely. It can mean three different things, and it helps to know which one you're paying for:

  • The piece physically changes. A convertible crib is rebuilt into a different bed with new parts. This is real conversion.
  • The piece changes jobs. A dresser is a changing station while a tray sits on top, then a regular dresser. Nothing is rebuilt; an add-on comes off.
  • The piece just stays useful. A nightstand or bookcase does the same job at age one and age fifteen. It doesn't convert, but it doesn't need replacing either.

A baby bedroom that lasts usually combines all three. The pieces to choose most carefully are the ones in the first group, because the conversion only works if the original piece and its parts are built for it.

The convertible crib: from day one to a full-size bed

Every Romina convertible crib is a 5-in-1, and each one lists the same five stages:

  1. Standard Crib (0–24 months), with an adjustable mattress support with 3 height settings.
  2. Toddler Bed (24 months–4 years), with a crib-specific toddler rail, sold separately.
  3. Daybed (24 months–4 years), which needs no extra purchase.
  4. Full Size Bed with Footboard (4 years to forever), with the full-bed conversion kit.
  5. Full Size Bed (4 years to forever), a second full-bed setup; on many collections you can add a low-profile footboard.

The conversion kit is where the crib really earns its "convertible" label. On the Karisma Conversion Kit ($530), for example, a set of hardwood rails hooks onto the crib's front panel or the optional low-profile footboard and bolts onto the headboard, and two slat rolls are provided. The box spring is included in the form of those slats: no separate box spring needed, just add a standard full-size mattress (54 × 75 in). Karisma's kit is tested to support over 250 lbs, and complimentary hole covers for the leftover crib assembly points are available on request.

Why add a low-profile footboard? When the crib becomes a full bed, the original crib front can feel tall in a smaller room. The Karisma Low-profile Footboard ($504) opens the space up and lets your child get into bed from more sides.

Kits and rails are crib specific, so buy the ones made for your model. All eight kits are listed under conversion kits and the rails under toddler rails. For the full-bed stage in more depth, read our guide to a crib that converts to a full-size bed.

What doesn't convert to a full bed?

Romina's Classic cribs are the honest exception. The New York Crib ($1,440), Uptown Classic Crib ($1,560), Quadro Classic Crib ($1,560) and Cleopatra Classic Crib ($1,725) don't have a full-bed conversion kit. They convert to a toddler bed and, depending on the model, a daybed; the Uptown Classic and Quadro Classic are described as 3-in-1. They're a good fit if you plan to pass the crib on to a younger sibling, or if you'd rather buy a separate bed later.

That separate bed can still match. Romina sells full beds ($1,725–$1,865) in seven collections and twin beds ($1,640–$1,780) in four. Both include the box spring, so you only add a standard mattress; the Uptown Twin Bed, for example, takes a standard US twin mattress, 39 × 75 in.

Convert or replace? The math with one collection

Uptown is a handy example because it offers a Classic crib, a 5-in-1 crib and a separate full bed (November 2026 prices, toddler rails left out because both cribs use one):

Path Crib Big-kid bed Total
Convert Uptown Convertible Crib $1,865 Uptown Full-Bed Conversion Kit $530 $2,395
Replace Uptown Classic Crib $1,560 Uptown Full Bed $1,865 $3,425

If you're sure you'll want a full bed, converting saves about $1,030 in this example. If the crib is going to a second baby, replacing makes sense, because you end up with two beds. Our 5-in-1 vs 4-in-1 vs 3-in-1 guide runs more of these numbers.

The dresser: changing station now, bedroom dresser later

A dresser is the most flexible piece in a baby bedroom. With a tray on top it's the changing station; take the tray off and it's simply the dresser your child uses through the school years and beyond.

Romina's Adjustable Changing Tray ($385, 38¼" wide) and the wider ACT60 ($425, 58¼" wide) work on most dressers and baby stations. Each comes with an attachment kit; always secure the tray to the dresser with the hardware supplied and confirm your dresser's dimensions first.

Because the dresser has to last much longer than the diaper years, the build matters more than the look. Romina's Karisma Double Dresser ($2,365) has 6 drawers, English dovetail drawer boxes, organic tree-sap based glues and hydraulic soft-closing drawer glides built to last 73 years. Our guide to the nursery dresser as a changing table compares all eight double dressers.

Add-ons that change a piece's job: hutches and desks

A hutch is the other true add-on. The Karisma Hutch ($1,505) is designed to mount onto the desk, the baby station or the six-drawer dresser, attaching with forged metal brackets and wall anchoring systems. Its bottom shelf is removable and height-adjustable. Hutches are offered in five collections: Antonio, Cleopatra, Dakota, Imperio and Karisma.

When homework starts, a desk joins the room. The Cleopatra Desk ($2,225) has plenty of storage for school supplies and a fully finished back, so it can stand in the middle of the room as well as against the wall; add a hutch for book storage when it's against the wall.

Pieces that don't convert, but don't need to

  • Nightstands ($1,030–$1,180, seven collections) sit next to the glider in the nursery and next to the bed later.
  • Bookcases ($1,780–$2,155, all eight collections) hold board books first and a full library later. The New York Bookcase can also be used for clothing storage.
  • Tall chests ($2,055–$2,605, six collections) add storage with little floor space, which matters even more once a full bed is in the room.

Romina case goods include a three-way wall-anchoring system for brick, sheetrock and wooden walls. Anchor every dresser, chest, bookcase and nightstand from day one, and keep them anchored as the room changes.

Which baby bedroom furniture comes in which collection?

To build a room that converts, start with a collection that has the pieces you'll want later:

Piece Collections
5-in-1 crib, conversion kit, double dresser, bookcase All 8: Antonio, Cleopatra, Dakota, Imperio, Karisma, New York, Quadro, Uptown
Classic crib Cleopatra, New York, Quadro, Uptown
Single dresser, nightstand 7 each (no single dresser in Dakota; no nightstand in Quadro)
Full bed All except Quadro
Tall chest Antonio, Cleopatra, Dakota, Imperio, Karisma, New York
Hutch Antonio, Cleopatra, Dakota, Imperio, Karisma
Twin bed Antonio, Cleopatra, Imperio, Uptown
Desk Antonio, Cleopatra

Individual pieces come in 13 finishes, so you can add a piece years later in the same finish. If a finish is ever discontinued, Romina says it will let customers know and give them a chance to complete their collection within certain time limits.

Buying it all at once: Crib to College sets

If you'd rather have the conversion kit in hand from the start, two sets bundle it: the Karisma Crib to College Set ($4,412: convertible crib, double dresser and full-bed conversion kit) and the Uptown Crib to College Set ($4,677). Both are part of the Quick-Ship program, with an estimated fulfillment time of 2–4 weeks. Like all Romina sets, they come in a short list of the most popular finishes rather than all 13. The toddler rail is sold separately. Compare every set in our guide to solid wood nursery furniture sets.

FAQ

What baby furniture converts as your child grows?

The crib and the dresser. A 5-in-1 convertible crib becomes a toddler bed, a daybed and a full-size bed; a dresser with a changing tray becomes a regular dresser when the tray comes off.

Is the conversion kit included with a Romina convertible crib?

No. The full-bed conversion kit ($530) and toddler rail are sold separately; the daybed stage is included. The Karisma and Uptown Crib to College sets include the kit.

Do I need a box spring when the crib becomes a full bed?

No. The box spring is included in the kit's slats, so you just add a standard full-size mattress. Romina's full and twin beds include it too.

Can a Romina Classic crib become a full bed?

No. Classic cribs convert to a toddler bed and, on most models, a daybed. For a full or twin bed later, you'd buy a separate bed.

Can I add matching pieces years later?

Yes. Pieces are offered in 13 finishes, so a tall chest, desk or bed can match furniture you bought for the nursery.

What warranty comes with Romina baby bedroom furniture?

3 years on cribs and 3 years on case goods; see the warranty page. Romina has never had a product recall.
