Every Romina hardwood crib side by side: style, size, stages and price, plus what to check on any wooden crib before you buy.
Short answer: a good solid wood crib has a frame made of real wood all the way through (no particleboard or MDF), a finish that's been tested for emissions, an adjustable mattress support and a weight that tells you it's built to last. Romina makes 16 wooden cribs in eight collections, all 100% solid wood, Made in Europe and Greenguard Gold certified. Prices run from $1,440 (New York Crib) to $1,865 (Quadro, Uptown and New York 5-in-1). The real choice is style, size, and whether you want a 5-stage convertible crib or a Classic crib.
Wood crib, wooden crib, hardwood crib: what's the difference?
In everyday searches "wood crib", "wooden crib" and "hardwood crib" mean the same thing, but on a product page the words matter. A crib can be called "wood" when only the posts are solid and the panels are engineered board. "Solid wood" should mean the structural parts are real lumber. "Hardwood" describes the type of wood; the hardwoods used for furniture are dense, so they dent less and hold screws better over years of assembly, conversion and reassembly.
Every Romina crib is listed as 100% solid hardwood, with organic, water-based finishes, no formaldehyde or VOC emissions and Greenguard Gold certification. If you want the materials science, our guide Is Solid Wood Good for Baby Furniture? compares solid wood, pine and MDF, and Non-Toxic Solid Wood Cribs explains what the certifications mean. This guide is the practical part: which wooden crib fits your room.
A 6-point checklist for any solid wood crib
- Frame and panels: ask if the whole crib is solid wood, not only the trim.
- Finish: look for a named emissions certification such as Greenguard Gold, not just the word "non-toxic".
- Safety standards: the crib should meet CPSC 16 CFR and ASTM F1169 for full-size cribs.
- Mattress support: adjustable, with at least three heights so you can lower it as your baby sits and stands.
- Weight: a heavy crib is usually a solid one. Romina's convertible cribs weigh 119 to 154 lbs.
- Parts for later: check that conversion kits, toddler rails and replacement parts are sold for that exact model.
Romina crib pages list all of these in the Specifications block. Every crib shows "Greenguard GOLD, CPSC 16CFR, ASTM F1169" and fits a standard crib mattress of at least 27¼" × 51⅝" with a thickness of no more than 6".

Choosing by style
Modern and mid-century: New York, Uptown, Quadro
New York is Romina's mid-century modern collection, with sleek lines and angled legs, and it can be ordered in one finish or two-tone with a separate accent finish. Uptown pairs natural wood with a painted accent finish for a warm, modern, Japandi-style room. Quadro is the geometric one: clean angles and balanced symmetry. All three are the compact cribs in the range. The deep dive is New York vs Uptown.
Shaker: Karisma
Karisma is a sturdy Shaker design that "does not shake when your baby starts rocking it", and at $1,725 it's the lowest-priced 5-in-1 crib. Read why the Karisma doesn't wobble.
Traditional and statement: Antonio, Cleopatra, Dakota, Imperio
Antonio is traditional, with a wrap-around apron. Cleopatra is Romina's classic English collection with carved corner posts. Dakota mixes Art Nouveau curves with a contemporary scale and can be ordered with or without the headboard appliqué. Imperio is modern-craftsman, with a pedestal base and architectural posts. These are the larger cribs, and they read as the centerpiece of the room. See statement cribs for photos and details.
Choosing by size
Width matters more than you'd think, because the crib usually sits against the one wall that also needs a dresser or a window. Romina's cribs fall into three groups:
- 53½" wide: New York Crib, Uptown Classic, Quadro Classic and Quadro Convertible (1360 mm). The Quadro Convertible is the only 5-in-1 in this width.
- 56½" to 58⅞" wide: New York 5-in-1 and Uptown Convertible (56½"), Cleopatra Convertible (56⅞"), Antonio (57½"), Karisma and Cleopatra Classic (58⅞").
- 60¼" wide: Dakota and Imperio.
Depth runs from 30⅛" (New York, Uptown, Quadro) to 34" (Karisma). If floor space is tight, read best cribs for small nurseries before you choose.
Open back or solid back?
Antonio, Cleopatra, Imperio and Karisma convertible cribs come in two headboard designs, open back and solid back, at the same price and with the same dimensions, mattress support and conversion kit. The choice is about looks, so compare the photos on each product page: a solid back gives the headboard a fuller, more traditional presence, while an open back keeps it airier. Both versions go through the same five stages. Dakota is offered with a solid back only, and its headboard appliqué is optional.
Choosing by how long you'll use it
Every Romina convertible crib is a 5-in-1 and lists the same five stages on its product page: Standard Crib (0–24 months), Toddler Bed and Daybed (24 months–4 years), then Full Size Bed w/ Footboard and Full Size Bed (4 years to forever). The daybed stage is included. The toddler rail ($260–$275) and the full-bed conversion kit ($530) are sold separately, and the kit's slats replace a box spring, so you only add a standard full-size mattress.
Romina's four Classic cribs convert to a toddler bed and a daybed but not to a full bed. They make sense if the crib is going to a second baby, or if you'd rather buy a separate bed later. Our 5-in-1 vs 4-in-1 vs 3-in-1 guide runs the numbers, and crib that converts to a full-size bed shows the full-bed stage.
Choosing a color: white, natural, gray or two-tone
Individual cribs come in 13 finishes, from Solid White and Washed White to Albero Puro, Harvest, Bruno Antico, Nocello, Navy, Rosemary, Sandstone, Peppercorn, Bianco Satinato, Ash and Aqua Grey. If you're after a gray crib, Aqua Grey is offered on all 16 cribs, and it pairs well with the same finish on a dresser or bookcase from the same collection. New York cribs can be two-tone, with the accent finish of your choice, and Uptown pairs natural wood with a painted accent finish. Nursery sets come in a shorter list of the most popular finishes. Because all individual pieces share the same 13 finishes, a crib bought today can be matched by a dresser, tall chest or full bed bought years later. See them side by side in the finishes collection.
What you pay for with a solid wood crib
A Romina crib costs more than most pine or engineered-wood cribs, so it's fair to ask what the money buys. Based on the product pages:
- Weight and stiffness. Convertible cribs weigh 119 lbs (Karisma, Quadro, Uptown, New York) to 154 lbs (Imperio).
- A crib that becomes a full bed. On the Karisma, for example, the conversion kit's hardwood rails bolt onto the crib headboard and hook onto the front panel or an optional low-profile footboard.
- Matching furniture for years. Every collection has dressers and bookcases in the same finishes, and most have full beds, so you can add pieces later. Start with the nursery furniture buying guide.
- A 3-year warranty on cribs, and a brand that has never had a product recall.
Whether that's worth it depends on how long you'll use the crib. Our cost-per-year breakdown puts the numbers side by side.
