What the label measures, what it doesn't, and which pieces carry it.
Short answer: Greenguard Gold is a third-party certification for products with low chemical emissions, meaning they release very little of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can build up in indoor air. It is one of the most common things parents look for in nursery furniture. Romina says every piece of its furniture is Greenguard Gold certified: all cribs and all case goods, from dressers and tall chests to nightstands, hutches, bookcases and beds. Every piece is also 100% solid wood, Made in Europe and finished with non-toxic water-based and organic oil finishes.
What is Greenguard Gold certification?
Greenguard is a voluntary, third-party certification program that tests how much a product off-gasses: the VOCs and other chemicals it releases into the air of a room. Products are tested in a controlled chamber and must stay under set emission limits to be certified.
Greenguard Gold is the stricter level. Its limits are lower, and it is meant for spaces where people may be more sensitive to indoor air quality, such as schools and healthcare settings, and for groups such as children and the elderly. That is why it shows up so often on cribs and nursery dressers: a baby spends many hours a day close to the crib, in a room that is often kept closed and warm.
According to Romina's product pages, its pieces are tested for over 350 VOCs and 10,000 chemicals.
What doesn't Greenguard Gold tell you?
A Greenguard Gold label is a good sign, but it answers one question: how much does this product emit into the air? It doesn't cover everything a parent cares about:
- It's not a structural safety standard. Cribs sold in the U.S. must meet mandatory federal safety rules for things like sizing, slat spacing and strength. Those are separate from Greenguard. Romina states that its cribs are periodically tested to meet and exceed CPSC standards.
- It applies to specific products. A brand can have one certified crib and an uncertified dresser. Check the certification on each piece you buy, not just the brand name. Certified products can also be looked up in the certifier's online directory.
- It doesn't tell you what the furniture is made of. A certified piece can be solid wood, plywood or MDF. If materials matter to you, check them separately.
- It doesn't replace good habits. Airing out a new nursery, anchoring tall furniture to the wall and following the crib's assembly manual still matter.

Greenguard vs Greenguard Gold: how to read the claim
When you shop, you'll see a few versions of the claim, and they don't all mean the same thing:
- "Greenguard certified" usually refers to the standard level, which also limits emissions but less strictly than Gold.
- "Greenguard Gold certified" is the stricter level, the one most parents look for in a nursery.
- "Meets Greenguard standards" or "low-VOC" may describe a product that hasn't been certified at all. Ask the brand whether the specific piece is certified.
- "Certified finish" or "certified paint" may refer to one material, not the finished piece of furniture.
The clearest claim is a specific product listed as Greenguard Gold certified. That's how Romina lists its cribs and case goods.
Which Romina furniture is Greenguard Gold certified?
Romina's FAQ says all Romina cribs and all Romina case goods are Greenguard Gold certified, and its Safe Baby Furniture page says every piece in the collection is certified. Here's what that covers, with starting prices as listed in October 2026:
| Category | Collections | From |
|---|---|---|
| 5-in-1 convertible cribs | Antonio, Cleopatra, Dakota, Imperio, Karisma, New York, Quadro, Uptown | $1,725 |
| Classic cribs | New York, Uptown, Quadro, Cleopatra | $1,440 |
| Double dressers | All 8 collections | $2,365 |
| Single dressers | 7 collections | $1,640 |
| Tall chests | 6 collections | $2,055 |
| Nightstands | 7 collections | $1,030 |
| Bookcases and hutches | Bookcases in 8 collections, hutches in 5 | $1,505 |
| Full beds and twin beds | Full: 7 collections; twin: 4 | $1,640 |
| Conversion kits and toddler rails | Crib specific | $260 |
The certification is also listed piece by piece. Product pages carry a "Certifications: GREENGUARD GOLD Certified, Meets CPSC requirements" line or "Greenguard GOLD Certified" in the description; the Karisma Double Dresser and the Imperio Tall Chest are two examples. Prices change, so check each page before you plan a budget.
Cribs: the piece to get right first
If you only check one piece, check the crib. Every Romina crib is Greenguard Gold certified, and the convertible cribs grow through 5 stages, from crib to toddler bed, daybed and two full-size bed configurations. That means the same certified piece can stay in your child's room into the teen years. Not sure whether you need a 5-in-1 or a Classic crib? Our guide to 5-in-1 vs 4-in-1 vs 3-in-1 convertible cribs explains what the numbers mean.
Romina cribs have an adjustable mattress support with 3 height positions and take a standard crib mattress at least 27¼ × 51⅝ inches and no more than 6 inches thick.
Dressers and chests: the biggest surface in the room
A double dresser has more finished surface than the crib, so it's worth checking just as carefully. Romina's dressers are built from 100% solid wood with organic tree-sap based glues, English dovetail drawer boxes and soft-closing drawer glides rated for 80,000 cycles, according to the product pages. The Karisma Double Dresser ($2,365), for example, has 6 drawers and can be used as a diaper changing station with a tray on top. Read using a nursery dresser as a changing table for the setup.
If floor space is tight, a tall chest stores more in less width. The Imperio Tall Chest ($2,225) has five large drawers and takes up little floor space.
Beds, hutches and bookcases: for the years after the nursery
The certification doesn't stop at baby furniture. Romina's full beds, twin beds, conversion kits, hutches, bookcases and nightstands are covered too. A few details worth knowing:
- Beds: full beds, like the Uptown Full Bed ($1,865), include the box spring: just add a standard full-size mattress. The crib conversion kits ($530) include it the same way.
- Hutches: the Karisma Hutch ($1,505) mounts onto the desk, baby station or six-drawer dresser with forged metal brackets and wall anchoring systems.
- Bookcases: the Quadro Bookcase ($1,950) is listed as Greenguard Gold certified, CPSC and ASTM tested and STURDY Act compliant.

What about the crib mattress?
Mattresses are usually certified differently from furniture. The Kinder Mattress ($385) lists its own certifications: GOLS Organic Certified coconut coir and GOTS certified organic fabrics, with zero fire retardants, no polyurethane or other poly-type materials, and CPSC testing at Intertek Laboratories. It's dual-sided, for the infant through pre-K stage.
What else makes nursery furniture low-toxic?
Greenguard Gold is the headline, but the build behind it matters too. Here's what Romina's own pages say about how its furniture is made:
- 100% solid wood in every collection.
- Non-toxic finishes: water-based and organic oil.
- No formaldehyde or VOC emissions, as stated on the product pages.
- Organic glues: tree-sap based on case goods.
- No lead, no phthalates, no chemical accelerants.
- Stain, then sand, repeated 3 times before the clear sealant.

A 6-point checklist for Greenguard Gold nursery furniture
- Check every piece. Look for the certification on the crib, the dresser and anything else in the room, not just on the brand's homepage.
- Check the materials. Ask whether it's solid wood or engineered board.
- Check the finish. Water-based or organic oil finishes are what Romina uses.
- Check crib safety separately. Look for CPSC compliance on the crib's product page.
- Plan for anchoring. Dressers, tall chests, hutches and bookcases should be anchored to the wall from day one.
- Check the warranty and history. Romina cribs and case goods carry a 3-year warranty, and Romina has never had a product recall.
What does a fully Greenguard Gold nursery cost?
The simplest way to get a matching, certified crib and dresser is a set. Romina's Quick-Ship sets start with the Karisma Nursery Set (5-in-1 convertible crib + double dresser) at $3,908 and go up to $4,677 for the Uptown Crib to College set, which adds the full-bed conversion kit. All have an estimated fulfillment time of 2–4 weeks. Sets come in each collection's most popular finishes; individual pieces come in 13 finishes, shown on the finishes page. Our guide to solid wood nursery furniture sets compares every set.
