Light gray, greige, blue-gray or charcoal: how to pick a gray crib finish and build a calm nursery around it.
Short answer: "gray" covers a wide range, so start by deciding how light and how warm you want it. At Romina every one of the 16 cribs comes in four gray finishes: Ash (a light gray wash), Sandstone (a soft gray-beige), Aqua Grey (a layered gray with blue and anthracite hues) and Peppercorn (a charcoal paint, "dark but not cold"). Rosemary, a deep green with cool gray undertones, is the fifth option if you want gray with color. The same finishes are offered on every dresser, tall chest and changing tray, so the whole room can match. All of it is 100% solid wood, Made in Europe and Greenguard Gold certified.
The gray finishes, side by side
Descriptions below come from Romina's own finish samples (November 2026). Each finish is part of the standard 13, so there's no surcharge for picking gray: every crib costs the same in any finish.
| Finish | Type | What it looks like | Hardware Romina suggests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ash | Water-based gray wash | Light gray with beige tones; "true gray wash, fresh and bright", warmed by the wood grain. High grain variation. | Black or bronze |
| Sandstone | Water-based stain | "A touch of gray and beige": light neutral with taupe and gray undertones. High grain variation. | Black and bronze |
| Aqua Grey | Stain wash with an organic color agent | Gray with blue, anthracite and discreet purple hues, warmed by the natural wood undertones. | Pewter and bronze |
| Peppercorn | Water-based paint | "Charcoal gray but not black, dark but not cold." Reads as a solid color. | Gold and bronze |
| Rosemary | Water-based paint | Rich green with cool gray undertones. | Bronze or pewter |
The practical difference is stain versus paint. Ash, Sandstone and Aqua Grey are stains and washes, so you'll see the grain and natural variation of the wood through the color, and no two pieces look exactly alike. Peppercorn and Rosemary are paints, so the color is more even and the grain is less visible. If you love a soft, natural look, lean toward the washes; if you want a crisp, graphic crib, choose a paint.

Five gray nursery ideas
These are starting points, not rules. Each pairs a Romina finish with the hardware and accent colors suggested on its sample page.
1. Light and airy: Ash with white and soft blue
Romina calls Ash a gender-neutral finish "making a quiet but bold statement", and lists whites, other grays and shades of blue as good accent pairs. An Ash crib with white walls, a pale blue rug and black or bronze knobs on the dresser gives you a bright room that doesn't feel cold. It's a good choice if you're not finding out the baby's sex, or if the room will be shared later. The Karisma Convertible Crib in Ash keeps the look simple and sturdy.
2. Warm greige: Sandstone with black hardware
If pure gray feels too cool for your light, Sandstone sits between gray and beige. It "invites light and complements bright interiors", so it works in a north-facing room or next to warm wood floors. Pair it with matte black handles and natural textiles (linen, wool, cane). The Quadro Convertible Crib in Sandstone is a clean, geometric option that's also one of the narrowest at 53½" wide.
3. Layered and classic: Aqua Grey with pewter
Aqua Grey has the most going on: gray with blue, anthracite and a hint of purple, softened by the wood underneath. That complexity makes it versatile in a lot of color schemes. Romina suggests pewter and bronze accessories, so a Cleopatra Convertible Crib or Imperio Convertible Crib in Aqua Grey with a matching dresser and Celtic Knot pewter handles makes a traditional room that still feels fresh.
4. Moody and modern: Peppercorn with gold
For a nursery with more contrast, Peppercorn is a charcoal that stops short of black. It's popular as an accent finish on mid-century and modern pieces, and Romina pairs it with gold and bronze accessories. Try a Dakota Convertible Crib in Peppercorn against a light wall so the curves stand out, or an Uptown Convertible Crib with a gold bar-handle dresser for a modern look.
5. Two-tone: natural wood with a gray accent
New York pieces are offered with a main finish and a separate accent finish, in any combination of the 13. That's how you get combinations such as Albero Puro (a clear finish that shows the natural wood) with Peppercorn, or Solid White with Ash. The New York Crib and New York 5-in-1 Crib both offer this, and the matching dressers and tall chest do too. For more on that style, see New York vs Uptown.

Which gray crib? Style first, then finish
Because every Romina crib is offered in all four grays and Rosemary, pick the crib for its shape and size, then choose the gray. A quick guide:
- Modern and compact (53½" to 56½" wide): New York, Uptown and Quadro.
- Shaker: Karisma, the lowest-priced 5-in-1.
- Traditional and statement: Antonio, Cleopatra, Dakota and Imperio, the larger cribs (up to 60¼" wide).
Our solid wood cribs comparison has every crib's width, depth, headboard height, stages and price in one table, so we won't repeat it here. If your room is tight, read best cribs for small nurseries too. Browse them all in cribs.
Matching the rest of the room
- Dressers and chests: every Romina double dresser, single dresser and tall chest comes in the same 13 finishes, including all the grays. Not sure which size? See single vs double dresser.
- Handles: most dressers let you choose the hardware, for example Celtic Knot in bronze or pewter, a Bronze Swirl Knob, or a gold or matte black bar handle (options vary by collection). Browse knobs and handles. Hardware is where you can follow the pairings above: pewter with Aqua Grey, black with Ash or Sandstone, gold with Peppercorn.
- Changing tray: both the Adjustable Changing Tray and the wider ACT60 come in the 13 finishes, so the tray can match the dresser.
- Later stages: toddler rails and full-bed conversion kits are also offered in the same finishes, so the gray carries through to the big-kid bed. Full-bed kits include a box spring, so you only add a standard full-size mattress.
One-order option: the Karisma Crib to College Set (crib, double dresser and full-bed kit) is offered in Ash, Aqua Gray and Peppercorn among its seven finishes and is part of the Quick-Ship program. The other nursery sets come in white, black and wood tones (plus a Rosemary accent on the New York set), with no gray option. See Quick-Ship nursery furniture for timing.
Before you order: see the gray in your own light
Gray shifts more than almost any other color depending on daylight, wall paint and floor. Romina sells 5″ × 8″ finish samples for $10 each, described as "the most accurate representation of how this stain/paint will look on the furniture", and they usually arrive in 5–7 business days. Order two or three of the grays and look at them in the morning and in the evening. Keep in mind that the washes show natural grain variation, and Romina notes that swatches and photos are an accurate, reasonable but not exact representation of the furniture you'll receive.
One more note if you're browsing our older nursery stories, such as Gabriella's Imperio nursery: some of those rooms show earlier gray finishes like Vintage Grey that aren't among today's 13. The current gray options are Ash, Sandstone, Aqua Grey and Peppercorn, plus green-gray Rosemary.
Three gray nursery mistakes to avoid
- Ignoring undertones. A gray crib next to a gray wall can clash if one leans blue and the other leans beige. Hold the finish sample against your paint swatch: Aqua Grey and Ash read cooler, Sandstone warmer.
- Too many grays at once. One gray for the furniture plus white, wood or a single accent color usually looks calmer than four shades of gray. If you want contrast, use a two-tone piece or a different handle finish instead.
- Forgetting the long run. A convertible crib becomes a full-size bed and the dresser stays for years. A gray you'd be happy with in a ten-year-old's room is a better bet than a trend color for the first six months.
Is a gray crib safe and non-toxic?
The finish doesn't change the safety story. Every Romina crib, in every finish, is 100% solid wood with organic, water-based finishes, Greenguard Gold certified, and meets CPSC and ASTM requirements for full-size cribs; Romina has never had a product recall. Cribs and case goods carry a 3-year warranty. For the details, read Greenguard Gold nursery furniture or safe baby furniture.
FAQ
Do Romina cribs come in gray?
Yes. All 16 Romina cribs are offered in Ash, Sandstone, Aqua Grey and Peppercorn, plus Rosemary, a green with gray undertones.
What's the difference between Ash and Aqua Grey?
Ash is a light gray wash with beige tones. Aqua Grey is deeper and more complex, with blue, anthracite and slight purple hues. Both let the wood grain show through.
Is there a dark gray crib?
Peppercorn is Romina's charcoal gray, a water-based paint that's dark without reading as black.
Does a gray finish cost more?
No. Each crib has one price across all 13 finishes.
Is "gray" or "grey" the right spelling?
Both are correct; "gray" is the usual US spelling. Romina uses both, for example "Aqua Grey" on product pages and "Aqua Gray" on the finish sample.
Can I match a gray crib to a gray dresser?
Yes. Dressers, tall chests, changing trays, toddler rails and conversion kits come in the same finishes as the cribs.
